“At the End of the Day” Movie Review and Event Details

A little while back now, the PFLAG Spartanburg board viewed “At the End of the Day”.

This film tactfully examines the conflict between the LGBTQ community and religious communities. Winner of the Audience Choice award at the Tampa Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, this film explores the conflict between religious groups and the LGBTQ community in an honest and meaningful way.  It also explores what the LGBTQ community initially looks like when you are still using the lens that comes from an evangelical background, which is something that a lot of us can relate to.

In the film, a conservative, Christian college professor finds himself planted in a gay support group and tasked with stopping them from opening an LGBTQ homeless youth shelter in their small town.

How this film effected me personally.

I was immediately struck by the parallel drawn between this film and what our local PFLAG chapter is trying to accomplish with an LGBTQ outreach center here in the Upstate. This is truly a timely and appropriate film for us to share with Spartanburg.

The transformation that takes place within the lives of the characters is striking and emotional. The film manages to balance humor and lighthearted discussion with some pretty heavy subject matter beautifully. More than once I found myself giggling or on the verge of tears.

As the sibling of LGBTQ people and a bi / queer identifying person myself, this film touched every single part of my life. Having a fierce love for someone who still struggles some times to accept me and my family members, raising children to be accepting and strong, being closeted into my 40s and feeling an uncontrollable desire to make this community safer for all of us … this film spoke to me on every level.

This is why our board voted to work with Tugg to bring a screening of this movie to Spartanburg on June 10th.

How does Tugg work?

Tugg is a platform that allows communities to share films that may otherwise have a limited audience. The way it works is, we have to sell 84 tickets before June 10th to confirm the screening. So, you don’t want to wait. If enough tickets aren’t sold, no one is charged and the event will be called off. Boo.

But that isn’t going to happen, because ya’ll are gonna go get your tickets for the June 18th showing right now.
